Malta is a small island country in the Mediterranean whose history has been shaped by its strategic position between Europe and North Africa. Across centuries, Malta was ruled by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, the Knights of St. John, the French, and the British, each leaving a lasting mark on its culture and institutions. Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964, became a republic in 1974, and joined the European Union in 2004, solidifying its place within modern European political and economic structures.
Maltese culture reflects a unique blend of Mediterranean and European influences. The Maltese language, derived from Arabic with strong Italian and English elements, is a central pillar of national identity and is one of the few Semitic languages written in the Latin alphabet. Catholicism plays a significant role in public and private life, shaping traditions, holidays, and social values. The islands are characterized by historic limestone architecture, coastal living, and closely knit communities. Valletta, the capital city, is renowned for its Baroque buildings, fortified walls, and urban design developed by the Knights of St. John, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Despite its small size, Malta possesses an exceptionally rich cultural heritage. The islands are home to prehistoric megalithic temples that are older than the pyramids of Egypt, highlighting Malta’s long-standing human settlement. A strong maritime tradition, rooted in trade and navigation, has also shaped Maltese history and identity. Today, Malta combines ancient heritage with a modern, service-oriented economy driven by tourism, finance, and digital industries. With a multicultural population and active participation in the European Union, Malta balances deep historical continuity with a contemporary, outward-looking European identity.
