Latvia is a Baltic country in Northern Europe whose history has been shaped by long periods of foreign rule and a strong commitment to preserving national identity. For centuries, Latvian lands were influenced and governed by German, Swedish, Polish, and Russian powers, limiting political independence but strengthening cultural resilience. Latvia first declared independence in 1918, but this sovereignty was interrupted during World War II, followed by decades of Soviet occupation. In 1991, Latvia restored its independence through largely peaceful means, and in 2004 it joined both the European Union and NATO, firmly anchoring the country within Western political, economic, and security structures.
Latvian culture is deeply connected to nature, folklore, and collective traditions. The Latvian language, one of the oldest surviving Indo-European languages, is a central pillar of national identity and cultural continuity. Folk songs (dainas), traditional dress, crafts, and seasonal rituals reflect a close relationship with the natural world. Large-scale song and dance festivals, recognized internationally, serve not only as cultural celebrations but also as symbols of unity and historical endurance, especially given their role in Latvia’s non-violent independence movement.
Geographically, Latvia is defined by vast forests, rivers, and a long Baltic Sea coastline, which shape both everyday life and cultural traditions. Today, Latvia blends its deep-rooted heritage with a modern European outlook, characterized by democratic governance, integration into European institutions, and a growing focus on innovation and sustainability. This balance between tradition and modernity continues to define Latvia’s national character in the contemporary European context.
